Families Play an Important Role in a Student’s Study Abroad

Study abroad is more important than ever, and there’s a new resource to help families guide their students through the process: A Family Guide to Study Abroad, published by IIE.

With all the talk these days about the demise of globalization, the impact of tariffs on the global economy and rising geopolitical tensions, study abroad is more relevant than ever. Why? Because studying abroad helps a student understand how globalization works, the interconnectedness and interdependence of economies, and the ramifications of tariffs and geopolitics on economies around the world.

Studying abroad is an effective way to establish international credentials like learning a different language, understanding another culture, studying within a new education system, and experiencing a social framework and local economy vastly different from one’s own. This knowledge becomes an asset on a resume and in a job interview that can help a jobseeker differentiate themselves by demonstrating an ability to learn new skills, work with diverse people and adapt to complex situations.

I firmly believe that every student should study abroad. But it’s not likely to happen without the active support of their families. That’s why I partnered with Allan Goodman and Bill Gertz to write A Family Guide to Study Abroad, published by the AIFS Foundation and IIE.

The guide is written specifically for families who want to learn more about study abroad. Packed with practical information, we explain the importance of:

  • Clarifying the value of study abroad.
  • Identifying the right study abroad program.
  • Figuring out the financials.
  • Staying safe and healthy abroad.
  • Preparing for success abroad.
  • Offering the appropriate mixture of support.
  • Helping your student maximize the experience for personal and professional success.

I hope more families and students will feel empowered to tap into the transformational experiences that international education promises. Also available in Spanish: Guía Para Familias Sobre Estudios en el Extranjero. Order your copy today!
